What’s the Difference between the Two Bachelor Degrees?

The Bachelor of Science degree is significantly different than the Bachelor of Arts degree. The reason to pursue on or the other degree should be based on the specific strengths and interests of the student. Many people have a preference for one degree over the other.

General Studies vs. Specialization

The liberal arts allows the student to pursue a general course of study and gain exposure to a variety of subjects. Students with an interest in technology may be more inclined to pursue the Bachelor of Science degree because the capitalist economic system provides incentives and rewards to students who focus their studies in technology and science. There is little interest in many corporate environments for degrees in the arts.

However, it is still useful to have an undergraduate degree in the arts for certain professions. For example, a company with an interest in developing corporate responsibility as a public relations strategy may prefer to hire a candidate with some knowledge about the liberal arts. This can be useful if the job involves articulating ethics or developing positive community engagement policies.

Bachelor of Arts

Most arts degrees involve many courses taken from the liberal arts discipline, and they include mathematics, ethics, humanities, literature, language, history and more. This degree normally involves creating a well-rounded course of study. It gives students a broad perspective of the world through the study of various different topics.

Historical Context of the Liberal Arts

The liberal arts emerged during ancient times. It’s curriculum provided the foundational courses of study considered essential for civic participation. Therefore, the courses a student can expect to take for a Bachelors of Arts degree may include work in the humanities, chemistry, history and languages. Many students who pursue the liberal arts find that career openings in related disciplines will justify the time and resources necessary to obtain this credential.

Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science degree is designed to focus the area of study on courses that are closely related to the student’s major. The coursework in this degree tend to be technical, and students often find that they can get a foot in the door in many different careers if they pursue this path. This is the course of study most often selected by students who have a strong interest in their chosen vocation and wish to devote as much time as possible to refining their skills.

Suppose that you wish to become the Chief Financial Officer of a company. To obtain this position, you would need to prepare early to meet the job’s requirements. You would quickly learn that many CFOs are credentialed as Certified Public Accountants, or CPAs. The next step you would take would be to find out how to pass the CPA exam, and you would find out that you need a Bachelor’s degree and other related coursework. However, you would also learn that the precise requirements for obtaining a license to practice are different from state to state.

In order to decide a direction of study to pursue, it is important to conduct a personal inventory. Ask yourself what kind of work you can visualize yourself doing for many years into the future. Try to pin it down. If you can actually define a potential position within a company that you want to obtain, you will probably be able to chart a course towards obtaining this position. Knowing all of the requirements for the job can help you decide how to prepare for success. With this knowledge, you can select the college degree that will get you to your destination.
