Texas A & M University is home to over 64,000 students and countless opportunities to develop talents for just about any career or calling. It is an especially first-rate place to become a teacher. TAMU is a leader in training teachers in many fields, including bilingual education, math, and science. The College of Education & Human Development fulfills the University’s mission to be “dedicated to the discovery, development, communication, and application of knowledge” by offering 19 undergraduate degree programs and seven minors through four academic departments. Responsible for the preparation of teachers, the Teaching, Learning and Culture department places “high value on collaboration, diversity, critical thinking, creativity, democratic governance and global leadership.” This collaboration happens in real time and in the real world if you are preparing to teach. The Elementary Education degree, called the EC-Grade 6 Generalist Certification Program trains teachers through coursework and a “heavily field-based program.” The program is enhanced by the Cultural Diversity requirement for all students, and opportunities for teaching in over 20 faculty-developed international experiences is available. With a respected reputation, an average early salary of $58,500, a NCTQ rating in the 99th percentile, and a net price of $13,700 Texas A & M belongs at the top of the list.
The oldest department of Marshall University is the College of Education and Professional Development. Founded as a normal school in 1867, COEPD has been training teachers for well over a century. The School now offers over 20 degrees with 11 special centers with 70 dedicated and experienced faculty to over 3000 students. There are three traditional elementary education degrees: Early Childhood Education, Early Education PreK-K, and Elementary Education K-6. All education degrees include coursework and field experience. Elementary Education candidates spend up to 600 hours during their program of study. Also important is the outstanding early reading training at Marshall, a critically important area of preparation highlighted by research at the NCTQ. Incidentally, the NCTQ scored Marshall’s Elementary Education program in the 98th percentile. The University of Wyoming has been providing young men and women a quality education since 1886. Recognizing the need to train teachers for our diverse and globalized society, the University created the Wyoming Teacher Education Program (WTEP). Providing an Elementary Education degree with a choice of four concentrations and the potential to add an endorsement is attractive. Concentrations include Interdisciplinary Early Childhood, Creative Arts, International Education Studies/American Cultural Diversity, and Environmental Studies. Coupled with a net price of $12,148 and a great reputation, University of Wyoming demands consideration if you’re called to teach. The program is 120 credit-hours with courses in general university studies and professional studies such as content pedagogy. Lastly, something important to consider when choosing a school’s teacher program is the school’s philosophy of field experience. The University of Alaska Fairbanks enrolls 10,000 students, mostly from Alaska. The diverse and growing city of Houston requires highly trained and professional educators. The outcomes standard, which ranks an institution’s ability to use the data of graduates and other sources to track, monitor, and improve the program received a “strong design,” the highest given. Related to this is the College’s newly revised blended early childhood, special education program that leads to dual certification. Arizona is a great state to teach in and Arizona State University is an excellent school to get a teaching degree. At ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College students receive relevant training for the noble art of teaching through traditional coursework, intentional fieldwork and student teaching, and the tech-tools necessary to be successful in our digital world. In 1871, with eight students, a little money, and a lot of commitment, the University of Arkansas was born. Now 140 years later, the land-grant University makes a considerable impact on the fabric of our economy and nation. The elementary education program is surely part of this contribution. SUNY Oneonta is located in Central New York in the city of Oneonta. Oneonta is about halfway between Albany and Binghamton. The NCTQ puts UR in the 81st percentile for teacher prep and gave an A rating for selection criteria. Since one of the overarching concerns of the NCTQ in teacher prep programs is not being selective enough, it demonstrates UR is leading the way. The School of Arts and Sciences Department of Education offers an Elementary Education PreK-6 degree. The degree is a bachelor’s in Liberal Arts with an Education Minor and Elementary Endorsement. Students who wish to teach elementary children earn a minor; the program requires admission into the Teacher Licensure Preparation (TLP) program. “Enter to learn, go forth to serve.” Brigham Young University is a private research university whose enrollment is nearing 37,000. Students are 99 percent Mormon and come from over 100 countries and all 50 states, though most come from Utah. BYU’s David O. McKay’s School of Education offers a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Special Education. All three of the programs end in licensure for the state of Utah and are fully accredited. “Elementary Education emphasizes ways to help elementary students enhance their thinking abilities, build their confidence in exploring new ideas, and become self-motivated independent learners.” Taking students through general education coursework and moving into professional practice knowledge and pedagogy, the degrees end with student teaching. Admission is selective, which the NCTQ scored an A+. The University of Dayton has been around since 1850 and is the largest private school in Ohio. The Department of Teacher Education, part of the School of Education and Human Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Education in Early Childhood Education (PreK-3) and Middle Childhood grades 4-9. Southern Methodist University is located in Dallas, Texas and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
