Either way, as a medical sonographer, you’re the one with the expertise to lead the way in this exciting new chapter of the lives of so many couples just starting the journey of parenthood.
But that’s not all. Ultrasound techs are used for all sorts of other situations where more advanced and expensive imaging processes would be, well, kind of overkill. In addition to the techs who specialize in pregnancies, the field also includes subspecialties like musculoskeletal sonographers, neurosonographers, and orthopedic sonographers.
Like so many medical professions, the job outlook for ultrasound technicians of any sort is extremely favorable. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics, for instance, projects over a 40 percent growth of the profession by 2020, with over 20,000 new jobs being added to the field. Currently there is no central, official certification process for ultrasound techs, but you are expected to undergo at least associates-level training before being turned loose. Students who wish to apply to the sonography program at UOHSC will be required to submit proof of 64 credit hours from this university or another regionally accredited school. These courses should satisfy the general education, math, and science pre-requisites as outlined by the department.

While there are various options for students at Rutgers, it is important to remember that the professional curriculum requirements are the same no matter what option is chosen. The only differences come in the pre-requisites. Students who are interested in any option are encouraged to call a Rutgers advisor to see what program will fit their needs best.
Rutgers University might be the only school on this list that has a dedicated DMS Professional Curriculum. It is composed of 45 required courses, including clinical practices and can be comfortably completed within 18 months. University of Missouri

The Kettering BS-DMS program has been ranked in the Top Ten Sonography Programs in the Nation by Study.com, and for good reason. The program is rigorous and reinforces the critical skills students will need in the ultrasound profession throughout the four years it takes to complete. Students are also taught by a world-class faculty, all of which have practical working experience in the field.
Kettering specializes its students in four different concentrations. These include abdominal, echocardiography, obstetrics/gynecology, and vascular sonography. Taking courses and having practical experience in each of these areas ensures that students can enter any specialization with the proper training needed to be useful.
The BS-DMS program requires 133 credit hours and a clinical externship for graduation. Unlike many other colleges on this school, Kettering only requires that students take the sonography courses on-campus. Pre-requisites can be completed elsewhere. Additionally, sonography courses must be taken in sequential order in order to earn the degree. Sample courses include Spirituality in Healing and Health Care, Sonographic Physics and Instrumentation, and Cardiac Testing.
St. Catherine University

St. Catherine University, known as St. Kate’s to students, is a top ultrasound tech school that offers a Bachelor’s of Science in Sonography. This degree prepares students to become valued team members in clinical settings. St. Kate’s, which is accredited by CAAHEP, also provides students with the valuable education needed to take the RDMS certification exam.
This degree combines an interdisciplinary liberal arts program with hands-on training and experiential learning. The first two years of this four-year degree are dedicated to humanities and general science courses before moving on to sonography courses, allowing students the chance to build a firm educational foundation before moving on to clinical practicums.
This degree requires 120 credit hours and 1,200 hours of clinical experience for graduation. Courses are taught by licensed ultrasound sonographers who are on faculty and is designed to give students hands-on training with real patients prior to leaving school. Courses include Healthcare Teams and Quality Outcomes, Communication for the Sonography Profession, and more.
University of Findlay

The University of Findlay has one of the fastest professional ultrasound technician programs in the country. It is a program designed to prepare students to become outstanding ultrasound professionals through a highly innovative educational format. This school is accredited by the CAAHEP upon the recommendation of the JRC-DMS.
This sonography program is available in a variety of degree options, including as a Bachelor of Science and an Associate of Arts. A certificate program is also available. Most students at Findlay, however, choose to pursue the bachelor’s degree.
Findlay’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program has three areas of study. These include Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Vascular Sonography, and Echocardiography. All three areas study a different part of the human body and how ultrasounds can help a physician determine health issues in those areas.
This program takes three terms to complete. The first term, known as the academic term, is dedicated solely to on-campus coursework. Students can expect to spend up to 40 hours a week in the classroom and doing lab simulations during this period. Classes are taught first in lecture format and lead into immediate lab experiences, allowing students to put into practice their newfound skills.
The last two terms of this degree are 100 percent clinical education practices for students. Students will spend 35 weeks, or 1,400 hours, in clinical settings and work with real patients. This ensures that students have the skills employers are looking for and feel comfortable as sonographers.
